Heartgard Plus protects against heartworm infestation as well as hookworms and roundworms. While no type of worm is good to have heartworms are the absolute worst for your dog. Transmitted by the common mosquito, they live in the lung arteries or right side of the heart and can cause serious health problems and even death. Infestation can be difficult to impossible to treat and cost a lot of money. Therefore the best remedy is prevention, make sure you are treating your dog monthly.
If you don't already use Heartgard or Heartgard Plus on your dog but want to start, an appointment with the vet is necessary. Your dog will need to be tested for heartworm infection first before they can be given this preventative medicine. Once the test results come back clear, your vet will prescribe your dog the right product for their size. As previously mentioned the green pack is for dogs that weigh 26-50 lbs. There are other color coded products for dogs bigger or smaller than this.
Heartgard Green can be bought from your vet or ordered online from a variety of sellers. It is necessary to have a prescription, you cannot just order this product on your own. If you decide to shop somewhere other than your vet's office let them know. The major companies like Pet Care RX and Drs. Foster and Smith for example will verify your dog's prescription with the vet before selling you the product. This is to keep your pet healthy and safe. Some people shop online for the bargains, which you may or may not choose to do. If you buy from the vet, ask about money saving coupons and discounts available.
