Generic Heartgard Plus
For dog owners interested in the Heartgard product there are generic Heartgard Plus products available on the market today. Just as with human medications, buying generic can save money on the cost of your prescription. If you find Heartgard Plus too pricey consider using a generic medication. Before you do, however, there are some things you should know about heartworm infestation, Heartgard and the generic alternatives to it. Heartworm disease can be fatal and is transmitted to your puppy or dog through the common mosquito.
Both difficult and costly to treat, heartworm leads to unnecessary pet deaths each year. Don't let your dog become another statistic. Speak to your vet about protecting them against heartworm. The first thing that will need to be done, regardless of your dog's age, is a heartworm test. It is extremely important that your dog test negative for heartworm infestation before preventative medication can be administered. After a negative test you are ready to talk prescriptions with your dog's veterinarian.
Heartgard Plus protects against not only heartworm but also other types of parasitic infestations. Therefore it is a very useful product to use for your canine. However if you are someone who would be open to generic drugs let the vet know as they may be able to accommodate you. Also if you choose to fill your pet's prescription with an online pet pharmacy they may also be able to do generics. One product to consider is Iverhart, which works like Heartgard Plus but costs less. There are other generic names as well that you may come across to save you money.
There is usually no reason not to use generic Heartgard Plus for dogs. If purchased from a legitimate pet pharmacy supplier, these products can be as effective yet less expensive. One thing to always look for is FDA and EPA approval on generic pet med products. You don't want to administer any questionable medication to your pet as this may actually cause problems. So before going generic, consult with your vet and do some research into what is available. Whether you choose generic or name brand, make sure you are giving your dog a heartworm preventative each month appropriate for their age and weight.
